Bermuda’s Mid Ocean Club Approves Major Clubhouse Renovation Ahead of Gil Hanse Course Restoration

Shareholders of Mid Ocean Club in Tucker's Town, Bermuda, have approved a major renovation of the clubhouse, with work set to begin in mid-January 2027. The project forms the first phase of a larger plan that will be followed by a Gil Hanse restoration of the 1922 C.B. Macdonald course.

Shareholders of Mid Ocean Club in Tucker's Town, Bermuda, have approved a major renovation of the clubhouse, with work set to begin in mid-January 2027. At a special general meeting on October 7, shareholders and proxies representing 61 percent of the club’s shareholding voted in favor while 13 percent voted against, Bernews reported.

The meeting drew more than 60 shareholders and members, as reported. Austen Gravestock, the club’s chief executive and general manager, called the result a vote of confidence in the board and in a professionally developed plan that aims to keep Mid Ocean among the finest golf courses and clubs for decades to come.

The clubhouse renovation forms part of a broader infrastructure rehabilitation project at the club. Bermuda Project Managers Limited serves as the club’s long-term advisors. The work is also the first phase of a larger plan for the property. Gil Hanse will follow with a restoration of the golf course, a sequence Golf Course Industry reported in July.

Earthworks on the course are scheduled to begin in October 2027, with a reopening expected in late 2028, according to The Royal Gazette. Hanse is set to visit the club on October 21 to speak with members.

Mid Ocean opened in 1922 to a design by C.B. Macdonald. It remains the only course Macdonald designed outside the United States. Hanse, whose work also includes The Trail in Union County, North Carolina, is restoring the layout toward the original vision of Macdonald and Seth Raynor while addressing the modifications Robert Trent Jones Sr. introduced in 1953.

The course’s signature hole is the 5th, a Cape hole played over Mangrove Lake that Hanse has called “one of the greatest holes in golf.” Earlier this year, Golf Digest ranked Mid Ocean No. 44 on its list of the World’s 100 Greatest Courses outside America. Computer-generated imagery by Harris Kalinka, drawn from Hanse’s hand-drawn plans, shows the restoration ahead.

The sequence of work gives the vote its weight. Mid Ocean’s standing rests on a 1922 Macdonald routing and a Cape hole that its restorer ranks among the best in the game, yet the club will begin with its clubhouse months before the first earthworks on the course. That choice echoes the clubhouse-and-course ambition at Frontier Club in Michigan and treats the building as part of the same long-term stewardship as the golf. When Hanse’s restored course reopens, it will be measured alongside the house that frames it.
