Woodhall Spa Golf Club, home of England Golf's National Golf Centre in Lincolnshire, England, is building a £9 million clubhouse designed by G1 Architects, with completion set for autumn 2027, Golf Business News reported. England Golf, the governing body for amateur golf in England, keeps its national headquarters on the same property as the club's two courses.

The brief asks for a contemporary reading of the traditional golf clubhouse. The design takes the character, materials, and architectural language of the surrounding Lincolnshire area and joins them to modern construction, while the building's position and layout are arranged for views across the Hotchkin course. Sustainability, operational efficiency, and high-quality materials are named among the priorities, along with welcoming, flexible spaces. A dedicated Heritage Room will hold the history of England Golf and Woodhall Spa Golf Club.

On its project page, G1 describes the concept as local character and architectural features carried into a contemporary golf pavilion. The firm says Woodhall Spa Golf Management appointed it after a competitive selection process to lead a design team replacing the existing clubhouse facilities with a single unified building, which project records show will also include a pro shop and offices. East Lindsey District Council's planning permission covers the clubhouse and a heritage center, demolition of the existing clubhouse, reorganized parking, and a new vehicle access, with a variation of conditions approved on June 24, 2026. The permission also grants outline approval for overnight accommodation for golfers on site, so that element is planned, though its detailed design is still to be approved.

G1 Architects is based in Windsor, west of London. In Scotland, the firm designed the three-story, art deco-style clubhouse at Castle Stuart near Inverness, now part of Cabot Highlands, where large glazing looks out over the Moray Firth, according to the firm's Castle Stuart project page. Woodhall Spa is an inland heathland property, so the brief turns the building's views toward the Hotchkin course rather than open water.

The Hotchkin is the reason this building matters. Golf has been played at Woodhall Spa since 1890, and the club was founded in 1891. In 1902, Stafford Vere Hotchkin offered sandy land for a new course, which opened on June 30, 1905, on a layout by Harry Vardon. Harry Colt redesigned it between 1911 and 1914, and Colonel Hotchkin remodeled holes in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1995, Neil Hotchkin sold the club to the English Golf Union to secure its future. The Union built Donald Steel's Bracken course, which opened in 1998, renamed the original the Hotchkin, and moved its headquarters to the site, now known as the National Golf Centre, according to the club's history. The English Golf Union is now England Golf.

During construction, temporary clubhouse facilities are operating from the Conference Centre on site, with a small reception area and lockers, while food and beverage service continues unaffected, according to the club's development page. The square footage, the builder, and a full room list have not been published.

Where some heritage clubs are renovating, as Bald Peak Colony Club in New Hampshire is beginning to do with its 1921 clubhouse, Woodhall Spa is replacing its building outright. At the home of England Golf, the Hotchkin is the course the English Golf Union bought in 1995 to protect, and it is getting a building planned around its own landscape and history: the course in the building's views, and the story of the club and the governing body in its Heritage Room.
