The Colony Golf & Country Club in Bonita Springs, Florida has entered the first phase of Project Plan 2026, a $16.5 million renovation of its clubhouse kitchen, dining, and social spaces. Phase I began on May 1 and expands the kitchen while redesigning the main dining room. The club is targeting completion for November 15, in time for Thanksgiving.

Peacock + Lewis serves as the architect. Don Garrett Construction is the design-build contractor, and Cheney Brothers, Inc. leads kitchen and bar design. The kitchen anchors the first phase. In construction updates shared on LinkedIn by assistant general manager Megan Somerville, Phase I triples the kitchen from 1,500 to 4,500 square feet. The expanded kitchen supports à la carte service for 150 guests and banquet service for up to 120 at the same time.

The main dining room receives a redesign with new furniture, fixtures, and equipment and a more functional layout. Phase I also introduces a New York-style pizza oven and a sound system that will enable the club to host concerts and presentations in the space. Somerville notes that the work remains on time and on budget and that Phase I is nearing completion. She has described the project as the first change to the clubhouse facility since the club was developed roughly 27 years ago.

The renovation also marks an early test of the club’s independence. The Colony has operated as member-owned since October 2022, following a period of developer ownership, and its board has brought management fully in-house, as Club + Resort Business reported earlier this year. General manager Chris Alvarez arrived in January 2025, and Somerville has spent about seven years at the club. Ahead of the vote, roughly 400 members toured the existing kitchen between December 1 and January 20. The plan then passed with 78 percent approval after surveys in which 98 percent of respondents requested kitchen expansion and better service. With 475 golf and sports memberships, the club has hired Executive Chef Erik Baker and Food and Beverage Director Justin Trignano, both formerly of the Golf Club at Palmira in Bonita Springs.

Phase II starts in December, with work continuing through the season while the club operates with limited facilities. Alvarez has indicated that construction will go vertical on a covered terrace at the start of 2027. Plans outlined to Club + Resort Business described a temperature-controlled terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows and room for about 100 reservations, along with a 28-seat bar overlooking the course. The club has not published how the $16.5 million total divides between the two phases.

This positions the Colony’s spending as a different kind of investment from the one at Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, where the $110 million West Clubhouse is a new building by AM Design Group planned for that campus. At the Colony, the funds go into the back of house of a clubhouse members already use daily. A kitchen that can run a 120-person banquet without shutting down à la carte dining for 150 changes what the club can schedule during the season and gives the new culinary team the room to deliver the speed of service members expect. For a club four years into member ownership, Project Plan 2026 also signals how its independent board intends to spend members’ money: on operational capacity first, then on the social space members asked for.
