Discovery Land Opens Tom Fazio's 8,000-Yard Course at Maverick Golf & Ranch Club in Fort Worth, Texas

On 1,100 acres of the historic Veale Ranch in west Fort Worth, Texas, Discovery Land Company has opened the 18-hole championship course at Maverick Golf & Ranch Club. Tom Fazio designed the layout, which plays more than 8,000 yards from the back tees. Roughly 140 members will take their first rounds in early November, according to PaperCity, as crews complete the remaining on-course comfort stations.
The holes sit graded into natural valleys, with playing corridors wide enough to "amplify the scale of the ranch," as the club's release put it. Fazio described the challenge this way: "From the back tees, the championship course stretches beyond 8,000 yards, with elevation changes and strategic routing creating demanding tee shots and approach angles throughout the round." Greens are 007 bentgrass fitted with SubAir and hydronic systems, fairways use Stadium zoysia, rough is Zeon zoysia, and native grasses frame the edges. More than 3,000 trees have gone in, and Golf Course Architecture notes that Bladerunner Farms supplied the zoysia.

Fazio spoke plainly about the land’s limits. "A great golf course would not make a very good ranch," he told PaperCity. "If you were really into ranching, you need bigger, wider, flatter spaces. With golf, we want narrow, small, hilly, rolling places." The magazine’s writer walked the property with Griffin Cooper, the club’s vice president of business management, and saw a newly finished driving range along with a cattle trough retained from the original Veale Ranch. Fazio joined the conversation by video from his North Carolina home after six hours of flight delays, while his son Gavin Fazio was present in person.
The club’s fact sheet lists no tee times, no dress code enforcement, and dogs welcome. Three comfort stations sit along the routing: Fish Camp, where players can fish while restocking snacks and drinks; a Hillside station serving Texas barbecue under the trees; and a drive-through station where attendants restock carts. The Fort Worth skyline shows from several holes.

Nearly 500 homes are planned, with the elevated home sites looking across the course from above the valleys. The first homes are estimated to be move-in ready in early winter 2027, the same year a farm and the property’s first full-service restaurant arrive. Michael Meldman, who founded Discovery Land in 1994, called the course "one of Tom's true masterpieces" and said it is "the heart of a community built for families and designed for legacy and connection." Baker's Bay in The Bahamas is a Discovery Land club where homeowner-members have now taken control from the developer, a far later chapter than Maverick's.
The club sits off Aledo Road northwest of Lake Benbrook, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Fort Worth, according to the Dallas Business Journal via WFAA. It was announced in January 2025, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, as a joint venture with PMB Capital Investments, the firm behind the 5,200-acre Veale Ranch development. Maverick is Discovery Land’s second North Texas club after Vaquero in Westlake, and golfers following ranch clubs nearby will also know Bluejack Ranch, the $2.5 billion Tiger Woods ranch club rising in neighboring Aledo, Texas. Fazio has three courses on the property: the Pinkerton nine-hole par 3, which opened in November 2025, this 18, and a 12-hole executive course planned for the next phase on the western side.

The first hole shows the course-first sequence. It looks northeast toward downtown Fort Worth from near the future site of the central clubhouse, which is still to come. "In this particular case, it fit near the clubhouse site," Fazio told PaperCity. "We saw that view, and we knew we had to incorporate it into the golf course. It's not an accident. It really sets the tone." The finished course of more than 8,000 yards already frames that skyline for whoever steps onto the first tee, with the clubhouse itself still ahead.
