Aspen City Council is moving an upgrade path for the municipal clubhouse at Aspen Golf Club in Aspen, Colorado, under a Golf Clubhouse Area Master Plan drawn with DTJ Design. The current concept keeps the house in place and expands usable space for golf, Nordic skiing, a restaurant, and broader public use, rather than demolishing the building and starting over.

The refined layout reached council at a work session covered September 15, 2026, by The Aspen Times. Aspen Golf General Manager Jim Pratt told members the building is already a community hub, not a golf-only room. "Just to remind council, the golf clubhouse isn't just about golf. It is a huge community hub," Pratt said. "With this project, we're trying to take everyone into consideration."

A May 4 work session had already narrowed three directions, updating with repairs and no size increase, upgrading by modernizing and adding amenities, or reimagining through extensive redevelopment, toward an upgrade that improves and expands the existing house, and the September session then refined that layout. David Poppleton, representing DTJ Design, told council the team wants a year-round community place and would expand the clubhouse instead of tearing it down.

The site plan holds the parking lot, tennis courts, and golf club in their present locations and grows usable space rather than clearing the pad. Tennis is drawn as three enclosed courts with a surrounding tennis pro shop, restrooms, and flex space, plus three outdoor courts above a new below-grade parking structure of about 50 stalls. Flexible multi-use rooms, with potential space for Aspen Junior Golf, and three new employee housing units would occupy the same footprint as the existing six outdoor tennis courts. An improved cart barn would raise capacity from 60 carts to 72 and add support for equipment and vehicles.

Mayor Rachael Richards said the most important test is that the project should not feel like a private club. It should feel like a community place the city owns. Council members, including Bill Guth, still have open questions on cost and how the work would be paid for, and no hard project dollar has been published. Members also discussed housing next to tennis, Nordic access on a lower level, discomfort with underground parking, and, in one related but separate conversation, how the campus sits beside the Aspen Recreation Center Master Plan.

The process is at the end of Phase 2, the stretch of exploration, feedback, and this second council work session. The next public touchpoint is October 20, 2026. Work session materials do not include a construction budget, a funding plan, or a build schedule beyond that date, unlike the published dollars and phased calendars already on record for Audubon Country Club's clubhouse renovation in Naples and the Olde Cypress clubhouse renovation.
