Cabo Real in Los Cabos Closes Its Robert Trent Jones II Course to Reopen as a Private Club

Cabo Real in Los Cabos, Mexico, has closed its 32-year-old Robert Trent Jones II course for a multimillion-dollar renovation. When it reopens in late 2027, the former resort course will be a private club for the community’s homeowner-members, with a new members-only clubhouse.

Cabo Real, a residential community in the San José del Cabo area of Los Cabos, Mexico, has closed its 32-year-old Robert Trent Jones II golf course for a multimillion-dollar renovation. The 18-hole layout operated as a resort course from its completion in 1994 until the work began. When the course reopens in late 2027, it will serve as a private club exclusively for Cabo Real members, according to a release on PR Newswire issued Oct. 20. Renovation started in September.

The shift ties golf access to property ownership in the community. Membership is reserved for real estate owners, and club privileges are limited to members and their invited guests. Cabo Real is developed by Meriwether Companies, the firm behind La Valle Coastal Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California, in partnership with Grupo Questro and Clubs Desarrolla, which the release calls “longtime stewards of the land.” The community reports more than $200 million in contracted sales to date. Homesites, including custom estate lots, boardwalk homesites, and ocean-view villas, start at $1.5 million. Turnkey Surf Casitas designed by the Mexico City architecture firm Sordo Madaleno are fully reserved, and the first homes are expected in May 2027.

Robert Trent Jones II described the site’s origins in the release. “Cabo Real is a very special place, one we first scouted on horseback, moving through arroyos with panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez in the distance on every hole. It has always had an adventurous spirit, and this new chapter with Cabo Real allows us to honor the original vision while making the course more playable, strategic and enjoyable for members.”

The plan, outlined in the release, is extensive. Four new holes are planned, Nos. 1, 7, 8, and 9, including canyon-edge and ocean-view holes. All 18 greens and bunkers will be renovated, the course will receive 100 percent turf replacement, and irrigation will be upgraded. Support facilities include a new dual-sided driving range with a putting and chipping green, four new comfort stations, enhanced golf operations, and upgraded cart paths. A new five-hole social short course will offer Pacific Ocean views from every hole. The club’s golf page describes the course reopening for members only.

A new members-only golf clubhouse will overlook the course, and the enhanced routing includes a signature hole that finishes beside it. For a layout that long welcomed visiting players, a finishing hole that ends at a private clubhouse marks a clear change in who the property serves.

“We are at an exciting moment for Cabo Real, with so many of the pieces we envisioned now coming together,” said Graham Culp, managing partner of Meriwether Companies. “With the course renovation now underway, we’re focused on creating an exceptional private golf experience that complements the community’s amenities and celebrates this spectacular destination.” Those amenities include racquet sports, wellness and recovery, mountain biking and hiking trails, multiple beach clubs, and food and beverage. Endless Surf’s first wave basin in North America, about four acres, is set to open in December, with an adjacent Surf Club expected in early 2027.

Meriwether, founded in 2011, applies a comparable approach at other properties, including Coral Mountain in La Quinta, California. At Cabo Real, the developer is betting that a private club with a rebuilt course will anchor the community, and buyers have already committed more than $200 million.
