The Winston Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, completes a 21,000-square-foot clubhouse redevelopment
Graham and FWBA Architects delivered a rebuilt clubhouse at The Winston Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, for $13.3 million CAD. The 21,000-square-foot project keeps part of the original building and is organized around a course-facing atrium.
The Winston Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, has completed a 21,000-square-foot redevelopment of its clubhouse. Graham, the project's general contractor, announced the work on September 23 and confirmed that construction finished in July. FWBA Architects served as architect and prime consultant.
The Winston was established in 1923 and sits minutes from downtown Calgary, which makes it one of the city's oldest golf courses. Where the Juday Creek clubhouse rebuild in Granger, Indiana followed a loss, this project started with an existing clubhouse and kept part of it. Folding that retained section into the new facility required close coordination of structure, architecture, and building systems so the old and new portions would read as one clubhouse.
The plan turns on a generous atrium that is both the arrival point and the main gathering room. The atrium can be seen from across the course. It joins the main entrance to the restaurant, the banquet hall, and the commercial kitchen, and from the same volume members reach the pro shop and cart storage on the lower level.

The restaurant is ringed by wraparound windows that look east across the landscape. A large dining room and patio pull the interior back toward the course.

Beyond the restaurant, the building holds the working program of a golf club: a lounge, private banquet and meeting rooms, administrative offices, men's and women's locker rooms, a pro shop, golf simulators, and club storage. While clubs such as Moselem Springs in Pennsylvania have lately put capital into the lounge and locker room, The Winston redeveloped the whole clubhouse at once.
Graham's project page lists a contract value of $13.3 million CAD and a contract duration of 15 months. Graham was involved from preconstruction and design development onward. For the full length of the build, the schedule had to leave the golf course able to operate.
The club has since opened the new clubhouse to members. On its website, The Winston credits shareholder support for making the project possible and calls the building "the heart of The Winston."
The club has been part of Calgary since 1923. The redevelopment matters because it gives members a year-round place to gather, not only a seasonal golf shop. The atrium makes the clubhouse legible from the course. The dining room and patio turn members back toward the landscape. A salvaged piece of the former clubhouse carries the club's history into the new structure. The capital has been spent, the building is finished, and The Winston now has a clubhouse that looks out on the course it was built to serve.
